HONG KONG AUSTRALIA BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

SOUTH AUSTRALIA CHAPTER PRESIDENT'S REPORT, NOVEMBER 2009.

I am pleased to report my second S.A. Chapter President's Report.

2009 has been another busy and successful year for our association. Our Chapter has maintained its high efficiency and cooperation among our committee. We are focusing in three major areas:

(a) Members networking functions, such as:

(1) Chinese New Year Cocktail function, which we have 190 people attend and free HK film 'Sparrow' screening after the function.

(2) Two Business Speed Dating events, jointly organised with Business SA

(3) HK Budget lunch at the Westpac House on 23 of March 2009

(4) We had Ms Bonnie Shek to talk about HK Trade Fair Capital Seminar on 8th April

(5) Our Annual Food & Wine Appreciation Dinner on 13th June which attracted 157 attendees

(6) Our biggest event, The Business Awards Dinner held at the National Wine Centre. We were honored to have Honorable Ms Penny Wong, Minister for Climate Change & Water, Mr Peter Hanlon, Executive of Westpac Bank and sport celebrity Mr. Mark Bickley.

(b) Trade Delegation to Hong Kong & China

We have organised three delegations this year:

(1) 27th April - Printing & Packaging fair, also Hofex on 2nd May to 9th May which we have had 6 businesses & 2 food companies.

(2) 3-10th July, we took a delegation from Tafe fashion department to Hong Kong to attend Hong Kong fashion week with 13 people altogether.

(3) 2-7th November, we have had a booth for the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Fair.

There are other trade delegations to attend, such as Hong Kong Forum in early December and our tour leader is our Patron Lieutenant Governor Mr. Hieu Van Le'.

This is an area which I believe our Association should be focusing on because it gives our members opportunities to explore new outlets or new suppliers for their business here in S.A.. Hong Kong and China are our future economic potential and Hong Kong is an excellent gateway to China. I encourage our members not to miss any opportunity to visit and to explore the market opportunities.

Coupled with the excellent working relationship with the Department of Trade Development SA, Austrade, DTED (HK), HK Trade Development Council and HK Economic Trade Office, we are planing to have four trade delegations next years and I would like to thank our trade coordinator, Mr Ian Mathison, Mr Mike Higgs and Ms Roz Meertens for their effort of putting together the trade delegations.

(c) Young Professionals & Entrepreneurs Group (YPEG)

Under the vision of energetic committees, Ms Vicky Kuok, Melinda Kuo and Wayne Cao, they formed the YPEG in August. They already have few events organised:

(i) Visit ArtLab on 14th August

(ii) Dinner at Mandarin House on 20th September

(iii) Wine Tasting at Universal Wine Bar on 15th of October

(iv) Seminar by Michelle Stanten at Pitcher Partners accountants firm on 3rd November.

The group is full of energy and I'm certain that it will flourish in the future and they have different market segment to serve in the community. I again encourage our members to support this group and their future functions.

On the Associations Front, we are absolutely honored to have Lieutenant Governor Mr Hieu Van Le' agree to be our Patron on 20th February. He helps us to lift our Association profile into higher level of business section and also lead us to the HK Forum. I thank him for his support, assistance and guidance.
